The Development Path and Revival Measures of Local Democracy in Britain

Abstract: British local democracy has the connotation of classical and procedural democracy, emphasizing local autonomy and citizen participation,mainly including representative, participatory, consultative and network. It has experienced the development path of decline and revival under the local governance system. The British government has implemented various measures to revive local democracy, mainly including improving local political leadership, granting more autonomy to local areas, encouraging citizens to participate in local affairs, and adopting various forms to revive local democracy, such as reforming electoral system, artificial intelligence technology and algorithmic bureaucracy, and local democracy forum. These measures have achieved certain achievements, but it is still necessary to cultivate citizens’ public responsibility culture and fundamentally promote the development of local democracy.
